Westport and Cowans Ford: Two West-Side Golf Histories
Westport and Cowans Ford show two different eras of golf taking root on Lake Norman’s west side.
The west side of Lake Norman did not get one golf story. It got several, built at different moments and for different audiences. Westport in Denver and Cowans Ford in Stanley are useful anchors because their opening dates are unusually well documented: Westport opened for play on July 26, 1968, and Cowans Ford dates to 1963.
Cowans Ford arrived in the same year Lake Norman's hydroelectric station began commercial operation. The club now describes itself as built in 1963, and the Carolinas Golf Association's course record also lists 1963 as its opening year. That timing makes it more than a course beside the lake. It is part of the first generation of recreation that grew alongside the new reservoir. The CGA notes a 2003 remodel by Kris Spence, a reminder that a course can carry its original date while continuing to evolve.
Westport belongs to a later chapter. A Lincoln County proclamation records its July 26, 1968 opening date. Westport's own course material says the club was originally built in 1968 and credits Porter Gibson as design architect. That places it five years after the lake began taking its modern form—enough time for recreation around the water to begin becoming part of the area's daily identity rather than an experiment.
The contrast matters for golfers today. Cowans Ford is a private member-owned club in Stanley with direct lake access. Westport is a Denver public-access course with a different social role: an everyday place to play, practice, and bring a group. Neither needs to be sold as the “best” course in the area to have a meaningful local history.
Together, they show how golf followed the lake in layers. First came a reservoir and the infrastructure around it. Then came places designed for recreation, membership, public rounds, and community. If you want to understand why golf feels embedded in the west-side landscape, these two dates—1963 and 1968—are a solid place to start.
